HISTORY

SOMATERIAL started its activity in 1969 with its founding partner, Mr. António Clemente Sousa, along with 10 other partners. Mr. António Clemente Sousa, since that date, was the managing partner responsible for the day-to-day management of the company.
Over the years, he acquired the shares from the partners, finally obtaining 100% ownership in 2001. As his children reached adulthood, he granted them stakes in the company. In 2005, the company transitioned to a joint-stock company (SA) due to the high turnover it experienced in the late 90s and the early 2000s.
The company played a significant role in supplying construction rebar for major projects in Madeira, including highways, expressways, the airport, and the construction of the Madeira Shopping and Fórum Funchal shopping centers.
In terms of ownership, more recently, the company has undergone significant changes. Given the advanced age of the founding partner, Mr. António Clemente Sousa, his children decided to pursue separate projects, each following their own path. Eventually, João Paulo Vieira de Sousa became the sole owner, and in 2020, he allowed his children to join the company’s ownership.
